Microsoft withdraws ebooks
Microsoft has removed the books category from its Store, meaning you can no longer buy or rent e-books. According to ZDNet, the company has decided to “optimize the strategic focus of the Microsoft Store” and that might annoy some customers who have made ebook purchases or rentals through the store. Owners can read their ebooks until the end of July with all pre-orders cancelled.
The refund will begin as soon as access to the ebook is revoked, and the original payment method that was used will be given back a refund of your money if it is still valid. Otherwise, the credit will be applied to your account to use within the Microsoft Store. Purchases made via gift cards and credits will also appear as a credit in your account.
Microsoft also allowed you to add special notes and annotations to books you had purchased, but that is changing come July. As an apology, the company will give you $25 extra credit for any ebook marked up before April 2.
Amazon has a dominant presence in the ebook market and is often difficult for other companies to compete against. This dominance has caused Microsoft to devise new strategies and tactics in order to make money from their business.
