New internet speed record
Australian researchers have found a new way to maximize the reach of fibre optic cables and make it easier for people to stream and play online games. The huge internet speed reached by the company is not a world record. The fastest speed worldwide was achieved by China, with Gaopeng reaching a massive 48Tbps in 2018.
The researchers achieved the record by using a “microcomb”, an optical chip that contains hundreds of infrared lasers to transfer data. That’s impressive because they achieved the record without having to rely on specialized infrastructure. This means that the existing internet infrastructure is always able to keep up with new technologies, even in the future.
Monash University Professor Dr. Bill Corcoran has stated that microcombs are helpful in a broad range of technologies, and that the global race is on to get them to commercial markets.
So Corcoran believes that this technology, which is similar to the world around us, could soon be available. In fact, he seems to think it will be in just a few years!
We may see devices like our’s in research labs within two to three years and initial commercial use within about five years.
