Ovum’s study about Greece

Ovum’s study about Greece | Ovum surveyed mobile phone prices’ fluctuation

A study from E.U and OECD showed that Greece had one of the most expensive mobile phone prices among countries when paid by the minute. There’s been plenty of research done recently, however, to counter this. Surveys have shown that Greece isn’t as expensive as other countries.

According to Ovum’s study, Greece has mobile service prices close to the European average and is relatively cheap in terms of after-tax prices.

Ovum uses a ‘basket’ of services in the period of 2014-2017 and reflects the average usage in Greece. It includes 175 minutes of airtime, 22 SMS and 0.33GBs per month. A comparison of the 21 different EU countries followed with regards to the cost of services in each EU country for 98% of the population. The result was that Greece appears to be 11% cheaper in pre-tax costs than the European average. In terms of after-tax costs, Greece’s mobile phone tax rate is similar to that of the European average.

There was a sharp decline in the cost of data services with prices taking a turn for the better over the past few years. The drop in price per GB is 73% during 2014-2017.

In terms of the quality of mobile broadband connections, Greece is in a good position, given that on average the data download speed is 36.9 Mbps, while the European average is 35.9 Mbps

But the methodology is different and has not been compared with any other studies in the EU or OECD. The NCA and Ovum officials say they’re relying on non-representative packages of data.
