The end of Google+

In a move that comes as a surprise to many, Google announced slightly earlier than originally planned the closure of its wildly popular social networking site Google+. The decision to shut it down evolved after it was revealed that there was a bug that exposed 52.5 million users’ data to third-parties.

This was the second time in 2018 that something like this happened. Millions of users’ personal data were exposed to third-party applications. Google made a statement however. “No third party breached our systems and we have no evidence that the app developers who unwittingly gained access to users’ personal data for six days were aware of this or abused it,” a spokesperson said.

The bug triggered on November 23 during an update. Almost a week passed before its identification and fix. This comes at a bad time for the company and CEO Sundar Pinchai. He has been preparing to give testimony before a US Congressional committee on the company’s data collection, algorithms, and potential political bias, etc.

The company, though, is not giving up and intends to “resurrect” exclusively as a “secure corporate social network” for businesses only, which will facilitate communication between employees within companies.
