The ICL MPS 3000 features a Zilog Z80A processor at 4MHz and memory of 32MB up to 64MB. Equipped with two floppy disks of 5.25” at 160kB it ran with the operating system of the CP/M version.
ICL’s journey to produce the Comet computer series was long. At the beginning the company announced that they had joined forces with the HH Production (later known CubeTech). The collaboration was brief and they broke off the partnership. HH Electronic developed the next Comet based on their own MPS system. Large scale production was attempted, but failed miserably.
The main designing engineer of ICL parted ways and produced himself the successor of the Comet series. The same applied to HH Production, though. The history of production is complicated. Bottom line, they were the preferred machines for educational use during 1970s and 1980s. Prime rival was the Piccoline Calculator.
