The Siemens S45i features a GSM Network connection without antenna, no Wifi or Bluetooth. The operating system was the manufacturer’s and was equipped with monochromic display and monophonic sound. Notable is the fact that the present model featured an uncommonly large internal memory capacity, of 360kB.
In 2001, the release of the Siemens S45i marked the launch of the first ever GPRS mobile phone, with Internet access, fast data transmission and dual-band GSM 900 and 1800 networks.
The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is the standard for the global mobile communications system on 2G and 3G cellular networks. The 2G cellular technology in combination with the GPRS provided the so called 2.5G network.
With this service, mobile networks can trasmit IP packets to external networks, as the Internet. This service is integrated into the GSM system.
