Project Loon

Millions of people around the world will be able to “talk” and “read” online because of Project Loon.

“Previously, Alphabet had only tested their balloons under controlled conditions.” The National El Niño has had a devastating effect on Peru’s infrastructure. Some networks have serious damage. Hundreds of thousands of people are now struggling to keep connection when they need it the most.

Telefónica, the largest telecommunications provider in several Latin American countries, has made an announcement. They were able to provide connectivity to thousands of people in areas most affected by the floods. In just 72 hours, Project Loon balloons, helped out thousands of people in C and NW Peru. The balloon remained 20km above the Earth’s stratosphere. According to the company’s announcement, they have moved 160 GB. This is equivalent to 30 million WhatsApp messages or 2 million emails.

Telefonica and Project Loon have been running technical trials in Latin America since 2014. This made it easy to connect remote areas to the internet. The basic infrastructure was already in place. Alphabet has a highly ambitious project that makes use of what are called “balloons” to supply high-speed internet access over a wide area. These cover up to 40,000 sq km – that’s as much space as three tennis courts.

Their stated goal is to offer wireless internet to areas that currently don’t have it, and ultimately connect the furthest corners of the world. The first phase will be coming out later this year, They have partnered with telecom service providers to share spectrum. Now, users will be able to connect directly to the network from their mobile phones and other devices that have LTE connectivity

The makers of the project have stated that they will be using artificial intelligence to direct these balloons according to users’ needs. In this way, they intend to improve the navigation control systems of these balloons and hopefully reduce their overhead costs for private sales–their current means of monetizing their invention. They are powered by solar panels, which collect energy during your workday.

In order to spread the project worldwide, they need ground stations of course. These will be ‘sources’ and get the bandwidth from them and then distribute it to customers.

It’s not just Alphabet-Google that is active in the industry, but also Facebook. What they are creating is a drone with better quality and less risk of crossing borders compared to balloons. https://sustainableuniverse.com/

It’s fairly obvious that big Silicon Valley companies want to be the first ones in so that they can make an impression and form a connection with new market users. This way, once people are more familiar with their services, they’ll more likely keep coming back because it’s what they know. Some may question whether this company is legitimately keeping data safe or the truth. However in Peru, the officials assured users that their information was not collected and they claimed they are doing everything to keep their promises.
