Smartphones have now became a very integral part of our daily lives, and it is hard to describe life before them. It seems though that they are slowly destroying our social lives and planet too.

There is a huge problem with carbon emissions from mobile phone batteries. Mobile phones are already responsible for a lot of carbon emissions. It’s thought that as people replace their phones more frequently. The amount of carbon will only increase by a greater degree. By 2040, it is estimated to have reached 40% of the global footprint alone.

There are now more smartphones than ever and the rate at which we replace our devices is incredible. However, the increased production of mobile phones has led to the increased use of minerals in manufacturing, which equates to a larger personal carbon footprint.

There are many servers and data centers in the world that receive a lot of traffic and require a lot of time and vast amounts of energy to handle the requests they receive. A study tells us that by 2040 it will account for 45% of all our electronic life.

When you’re ready for a new phone, remember that it’s important to recycle your old phones for their parts. As study leader Lotfi Belkhir tells us, “based on our research and other sources, less than 1% of smartphones are currently recycled.”.
