New feature on Facebook and Instagram

Starting today, Facebook and Instagram are rolling out a new feature that helps users manage their time online. They can easily check activity and control their screen time.

Facebook has announced a few new features that will help you spend your time on the network more wisely. These features prevent internet addiction and help users stay focused. They include a toolbar that works as an alert for when the user has been online for too long and a dashboard that tracks how much time they spend on the app. Instagram has the same features.

These changes are part of the company’s attempt to change course after a couple of high-profile scandals such as the Cambridge Analytica incident and to tweak its usage model in order to address user addiction. Focusing on “time well spent” on the apps, the company wants to ensure that “the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram [is] intentional, positive and inspiring”.

So here’s how to find out the exact amount of time you spend online on your favorite social media apps.

For Instagram: You can access how much time you spend on the app by going to Settings and then clicking “Your Activity”. Once clicked, you’ll find that it lists your daily average as well as your overall weekly average. On Facebook the process is a bit different: under the menu tab, click on “Settings and Privacy.” Next, go to “Your Time on Facebook”, to check activity and you’ll be taken to another control panel that has many of the same features as Instagram.
