A former whaling station, the museum is located in Grytviken in the South Atlantic. Situated near the administrative center of UK overseas territory, the region has no permanent residents, but rather seasonal researchers. The museum was housed in the Villa, the residence of the manager from the whaling station. The villa burnt down and for some decades was left isolated to rot until the grand renovation procedure. Since its founding back in 1992, it was a whaling museum, specializing only on anything maritime and over natural history. Later on, exhibits on technology and industry were added.

One very exciting fact is that because of the temporary type of habitance, all exhibits are documented and the museum entered an era of digital transformation. Through a gallery, online visitors can virtually tour the collection from any angle of the world. It is truly fascinating to have remote open access to the remotest museum in the whole wide world. Displays are actually distributed on the whole establishment of the old manager’s villa, so the visitor can preview the ground floor and explore the other rooms as well.
