Te Papa Museum | Technology Museums of the World
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the national museum, located in Wellington and established back in 1992. Today, the gallery is ranking among the top 20 most visited ones in the world. Te Papa literally translates to “treasure box” in the Maori indigenous language.
Te Papa’s predecessor, the Colonial Museum, founded back in 1865, focused more on scientific collections including only a few paintings and ethographic curiosities. Only at the turn of the century, the Science and Art Act of 1913 paved the way for a national art gallery. The institution from then on had a broader permit to explore the national identity of New Zealand and embrace the culture of the indigenous people, the Maori, as well.
Pacific cultures and Maori taonga (cultural treasures) are explored. The museum embraced harmoniously culture and technology in such a wholesome way. Exhibitions include some hands-on interactive activities and cultural spaces. Furthermore, the initiative of learning the Maori language through workshops for all ages still is holding strong.
