Spotify is overloading and people are saying it’s, in some cases, causing their SSDs to fail. For more than five months, Spotify has been filling up storage devices and potentially stealing years of expected media lifespan. Reports say that there are up to hundreds of ‘GBs and in some cases, even terabytes’ being written to SSDs using the app. It’s also happened when people used Spotify.
We found that usual SSDs don’t work so well when they get a bit of wear and tear. But it’s not the end of the world, because there are some other storage media type that also provide top-tier performance. Apparently, these unnecessary writes are causing significant wear-and-tear on SSDs and have been the cause of reduction in lifespan. Spotify overloading has become an increasingly frequent problem among users and they are talking about it in Reddit.
A technology site called Arstechnica was able to reproduce the problem and find out that the app can write 5-10 GB in less than an hour. In cases where the app is running for too long, it could have taken up to 700GB of space.
The problem with Spotify’s playlists has been acknowledged and fixed in the latest update.
