History’s first phone call by Graham Bell | Techday March 10th
Just think of all the great things we get to do on our phones nowadays. But it’s easy to forget that this technology was once revolutionary and not everyone understood what it would mean for the world. Alexander Graham Bell received the US patent for the device on February 14th 1876, but the first phone call was made on March 10th. Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson had been developing the technology for three years. During the first call, he called to his assistant saying “Mr. Watson, come here! I want to see you!”. This simple sentence was the beginning of what is now ordinary for most every person on the planet.
This event has been called his “greatest success”, as it demonstrated the first successful use of the telephone. Despite that, he refused to have a telephone in his own home because it was something he invented by mistake and saw it as a distraction from his main studies (Bell had spent his life studying sound as the child of speech instructors and the husband of a partially deaf wife).
