Launch of USB 3.0 | A new generation for the USB standard | Techday, November 12th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 12th 2008, the third major version of the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard was released. USB 3.0 offered many improvements, the most important of which was probably its speed. The new transfer rate, known as SuperSpeed USB (SS), can transfer data at a speed of up to 5 Gbit/s (Gbps), making it around ten times as fast as its predecessor the 2.0’s maximum, Hi-Speed. Manufacturers usually distinguish the USB 3.0 from the 2.0 connectors by using the color blue for the Standard-A plugs and receptacles, and by using the initials SS.
Another key features of USB 3.0, besides the high speed, is its backward compatibility. It is able to work with devices that were designed for earlier versions of USB. This allows for a smooth transition to the new standard, as users can continue to use their existing devices while also taking advantage of the new features and benefits of USB 3.0.
