PlayStation 3 launch | Techday, November 11th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 11th 2006, was the original release of the game console Playstation 3, in the Japanese market. It was a console that introduced many innovations to the brand. It was the first one to adopt Blue-Ray Disk technology as its main storage medium, the first one to assimilate social gaming services (such as PlayStation Network), and the first one to accept handheld devices/consoles (PlayStation Portable and Vita) as controllers, via their remote connectivity.
The PS3 was the first video game console to include a built in Blu-ray Disc player, which allowed for high-definition video playback and storage of large amounts of data.
The console received critique on various matter. Some include the high price tag, lack of backward compatibility with PS2 games, and a lack of compelling launch titles. Despite these issues, the PS3 went on to become a popular and successful console, with over 87 million units sold worldwide.
