First integrated circuit demonstration | Techday, September 12th
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 12th 1958, marked the first integrated circuit ‘s demonstration! Jack Kilby demonstrated the first functional integrated circuit (IC) to a group of his colleagues and executives at Texas Instruments. The purpose was to prove that resistors and capacitors can coexist on the same piece of semiconductor. To this end, Kilby used a germanium plate (thinner than a toothpick) to fit five passive elements, including a resistor, capacitor and transistor, connected by wire. Kilby’s circuit measured 1 x 0.16 cm.
The IC was a revolutionary development in the field of electronics. It allowed for the miniaturization of electronic devices, making them more portable and affordable. It also led to the development of new technologies such as microprocessors and memory chips, used in computers and other electronic devices.
