First laser copier printer | The IBM 6670 introduced | Techday, February 13th
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 13th 1979, IBM announces the first laser copier-printer in history. The IBM 6670 was a pretty heavy unit, supplied either independently or as part of OS/6 (Office System/6) to companies with increased document production requirements. The set also featured the innovative technology of two-sided printing.
The Information Distributor and its Collator Unit, the IBM 6671, withdrew from the market 7 years after relase, back in 1986. The models principal goal, as marketed, was to offer a high speed copying machine, linked electronically to computers, typewriters and automated office equipment.
With the release of the 6670, the OS/6 introduced a communication-enabled laser printer and photocopier. Until then, the System presented building blocks, inkjet, printers, floppy disk station, and even a stand-alone CPU. It didn’t include, though, a magnetic card or printing capabilities at this point, though.
