YouTube meets the world | Techday, February 14th
YouTube is an online social media and video sharing platform owned by Google (since October 2006). Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim founded on this TECHDAY in history, on February 14th 2005, the famous platform. It is now probably the second most popular website after Google.
YouTube has an unprecedented social impact, influencing everything from popular culture to internet trends to multimillionaire celebrities. Though it’s had a lot of growth and is still quite successful, YouTube has also some controversial aspects.
The critique on the platform revolves around misinformation spread and censored content, where violations of users’ privacy occur on a routine basis and where child safety and wellbeing can be at risk. YouTube has approximately one billion monthly users and they collectively watch one billion hours of videos each day.
Fun fact, the three founding members were early employees of PayPal, left enriched after the buyout by eBay.
