First Zeppelin flight | Techday, July 2ndΒ
The first Zeppelin airship was designed by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin and made its initial directed flight from a floating hangar on Lake Constance, near Friedrichshafen in Germany on this TECHDAY in history, on July 2nd 1900.
The flight lasted for 18 minutes and covered a distance of 6.5 miles. The LZ 1 was a rigid airship, which means that it had a metal framework that held the shape of the airship. Filled with hydrogen gas, which provided lift, the aircraft powered by a single engine.
The airship was controlled by a pilot who sat in a gondola suspended beneath the airship. The gondola also had a small passenger compartment.
The first flight of the LZ 1 was a success and proved that the concept of the rigid airship was viable. Count Zeppelin immediately began work on a larger airship, the LZ 2, which made its first flight in 1906.
