IBM and Apple agreement | Techday, July 3rd
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 3rd 1991, IBM Vice President Jim Cannavino signs an agreement with Apple CEO John Scully, laying the foundation for future cooperation between the two companies and the development of Apple computers based on IBM’s RISC processors, the famous PowerPC platform, which would later be joined by Motorola. This agreement also marked the beginning of a standardisation effort at the hardware and operating system level.
The collaboration was a significant development in the personal computer industry. It brought together two major players with complementary strengths. IBM had a strong reputation for quality, reliability and technology, and Apple had a strong reputation for design and user experience. The partnership was a way for both companies to fend off competition from Microsoft and Intel, which dominated the PC market at that time.
The partnership, however, was short-lived, IBM sold its personal computer division to Lenovo in 2005, and the Power Macintosh line was discontinued by Apple in 2006.
