First solo transatlantic flight | Techday, May 20th
On this TECHDAY in history, on May 20th 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field in Mineola, New York, and went on to complete the first successful solo flight from America to Europe.
The 25-year-old American aviator, flew the single-engine monoplane Spirit of St. Louis nonstop on the evening of May 21 with after many challenges. He traveled from Roosevelt Field in Long Island, New York to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France. The flight covered a distance of approximately 3,600 miles (5,800 km) and took 33.5 hours to complete.
Lindbergh’s flight was a significant achievement, as it demonstrated that long-distance air travel was practical and opened the door for the development of the modern airline industry. Lindbergh received numerous accolades for his feat, including the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Nobel Prize in Physics.
