First Youtube video uploaded | Techday, April 23rd
On this TECHDAY in history, on April 23rd 2005, launched the online video hosting service. On this day, the first video was uploaded to YouTube. The video was titled “Me at the zoo“. The 25-year-old co-founder of YouTube Jawed Karim filmed himself in front of the elephants at the San Diego Zoo and commented on them. The video has a runtime of just under 20 seconds and has received over 85 million views.
Before YouTube, there were limited options for sharing videos online. Most video sharing websites at the time required users to download special software to their computers in order to upload and share videos. YouTube made it easy for anyone to upload and share videos by simply using a web browser.
Since its inception, YouTube has become a household name and an integral part of the internet. It is now the world’s second-largest search engine, with over 2 billion logged-in users per month. The platform hosts billions of videos, including music videos, movie trailers, educational content, and user-generated content such as vlogs and makeup tutorials.
In 2006, Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion. Today, the platform generates billions of dollars in revenue through advertising, subscriptions, and product placements. It has also given rise to a new generation of creators and influencers who have built careers and businesses on the platform.
