First rocket launch | Techday, July 24th
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 24th 1950, the first successful rocket launch happened at Cape Canaveral. The rocket’s name was Bumper 8 and it was a modified German V-2 rocket. Cape Canaveral is located in the southeast of the U.S.A. and due to its geography was an ideal site for launches of rockets in the US.
During the 1950s, the Soviet Union and the United States were engaged in a “space race” to see who could launch the first satellite, send the first human into space, and land the first spacecraft on the Moon.
Bumper 8 was a two-stage rocket developed by the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s as part of the Bumper program. The Bumper program was a research and development program that aimed to test the capabilities of high-speed rocket vehicles and to investigate the upper atmosphere.
