The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that happened on this TECHDAY in history, on April 26th 1986, at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in nowadays north Ukraine. It is considered to be one of the worst nuclear disasters ever recorded. It began with an experiment that resulted in the 4th reactor exploding and melting down. This was not announced until 2 days after, on April 28th 1986.
The explosion sent a cloud of radioactive dust over Europe. Thirty-one people, mostly firefighters, died immediately after the explosion. Several thousand more have since died from radiation-related illnesses. The shutdown of the last reactor formally celebrated on December 15th, 2000.
The resulting release of radioactive materials into the atmosphere led to the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. Large areas in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia got contamination, resulting in the deaths from cancer and other radiation-induced illnesses.
The disaster had a lasting impact on the environment and on global relations, as it caused widespread fear of nuclear power and raised questions about the safety of the Soviet nuclear industry. It also had a significant effect on the future of energy production and regulation, as it led to the creation of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Convention on Nuclear Safety.
