“RADAR”‘s first demonstration | Invention of RADAR | Techday, February 26th
Revolutionary breakthroughs in technology, such as the invention of RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) by Scottish physicist Robert Watson-Watt, changed the course of history. Nobel prize winner Sir Robert Watson-Watt, found that using radio waves allowed him to detect storms. On this TECHDAY in history, on February 26th 1935, RADAR’s first test for military uses took place.
The detection system uses radio waves to determine the distance and velocity of objects on site. It can detect ships, aircrafts, motor vehicles, formations and the weather.
Fun fact, RADAR was one of the major factors in the Allies’ victory in World War II. After the end of the war, research into RADAR continued, leading to other discoveries and inventions. One of these is a new device called a transistor and this has enabled us to develop machines that are small enough to fit in things like cell phones or cars.
