Intel i860 processor release | Techday, February 27th
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 27th 1989, for the first time in 8 years, since the failure of i432, Intel releases another high end, RISC-technology microprocessor that went beyond the classic x86 architecture.
With this particular model Intel attempted to make an entirely new architecture. In fact, it was the world’s first million-transistor chip! The i860 processor was the shade of the earlier i960, successful in niches of embedded systems and with better design. The i860 was used as a workstation microprocessor by various companies, but didn’t see commercial success and it was terminated in the mid 1990s.
Fun fact, back at the time, the i860 presented many strong features. Some of these unique elements were the architecture and support for the high-speed operations. Eventually, more recent models outperformed the chip processor, especially with compilers gradually improved over the years.
