On this TECHDAY in history, on June 27th 1972, Atari was founded in California by Nolan Bashnell and Ted Dabney as an arcade manufacturer. The corporation would expand its business from arcade game manufacturing, to game consoles and computers until 1996, when it was successively transferred from JTS to Hasbro and finally to Infogrames.

The company entered the video game console market with the release of the Atari 2600. This console’s alternative name was the Atari VCS (Video Computer System). The 2600 was one of the first successful consoles, known for its vast library of games, many of which created by themselves.

The Atari 2600 was a commercial success, selling over 30 million units worldwide. It was one of the first consoles to establish the home video game market. It would be the first to pave the way for future consoles such as the Atari 5200 and 7800. The console’s success also led to the formation of the video game industry as we know it today.

The company’s early success in the gaming console market also helped to establish video games as a legitimate form of entertainment. It led to the creation of other home video game companies such as Mattel and Coleco. The 2600’s legacy is present in the industry for decades, and it remains one of the most recognizable consoles of all time.
