Birthday of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose | A radio pioneer | Techday, November 30th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 30th 1858, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose was born. His birthplace was a province of British India, nowadays Bangladesh. He is considered one of radio science’s fathers. A physicist, a biologist, a botanist, and also one of the earliest writers of science fiction he has been. He was a pioneer in the research of radio and microwave optics and had noteworthy contributions to plant science as well.
Generally, he was an important figure behind experimental science’s expansion in the Indian subcontinent. He was the founder of the first interdisciplinary research center in Asia, and one of the oldest research institutes in India, the Bose Institute.
He was the first person to demonstrate that plants also have life and feelings like animals. His invention of the crescograph, an instrument for measuring the growth of plants, revolutionized the study of plant physiology. Bose conducted pioneering research in microwave optics and made significant contributions to the study of the electronic behavior of materials.
Despite his many achievements, Bose’s work was often overlooked during his lifetime because of the racial prejudice that existed in the scientific community at the time.
