Voyager 1 launch | Techday, September 5th
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 5th 1977, Voyager 1 launched. It was one of NASA’s space probes, and a part of the Voyager program. Its objective was to study the outer area of our Solar System and the interstellar space that lies beyond the Sun’s heliosphere.
Voyager 1’s primary mission was to study the outer planets Jupiter and Saturn, but it has continued to operate and send back data from beyond the solar system. The spacecraft flew by Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980, returning the first close-up images of their atmospheres and moons.
After completing its primary mission, Voyager 1 continued on its journey into interstellar space, becoming the first human-made object to reach this region in 2012. It is currently more than 22 billion kilometers (13.7 billion miles) from Earth, and its instruments are still operational.
It has been operating for all these years, and still maintains communication with the Deep Space Network to receive routine commands and to transmit data back to Earth. Data about its distance and velocity is provided to the public in real-time by NASA and JPL. Right now, it is considered the most distant object from Earth made by man.
