On this TECHDAY in history, April 6th 1992, Windows 3.1 is released by Microsoft, an OS that provides a graphical user interface and features that are compatible with IBM and other PC brands. They release the system at $149 to the public. Microsoft’s Windows release created an operating system that was similar to the Mac OS, and Apple sued for copyright infringement. Microsoft later won this suit, though. The new version of the program provided scalable fonts and prevented the user from accidentally rebooting their machine.
It was the first version of Windows to gain widespread commercial success. Furthermore, it supported 32-bit protected mode, which allowed it to run much faster than earlier versions of Windows. It also introduced support for TrueType fonts, which made it easier to display high-quality text on screen. Another first, it was capable of supporting networking, allowing users to share resources such as printers and files over a network. The user interface of Windows 3.1 was similar to that of previous versions of Windows, but it included several new features such as Program Manager, which allowed users to launch and organize programs, and File Manager, which made it easier to manage files. Windows 3.1 was a significant improvement over earlier versions of Windows and was widely used on both home and business computers.
