The 1GHz barrier is broken! | Techday, February 7th
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 7th 2000, at the IEEE (the International Solid State Circuits Conference) the two big rivals in the processors market, Intel and AMD, presented demo versions of Pentium III and Athlon respectively. They were both processors that broke the 1GHz barrier. The Pentium III’s clocked at 1GHz, while the Athlon’s climbed to 1.1GHz. Isn’t it amazing?
Intel’s Pentium III series, first introduced in 1999, remained in production until 2003 with the next brand line released. Celeron and Xeon were diefferent end derivative models of the series. On the other hand, AMD’s Athlon brand line decribed the prized contest with competitors. According to benchmarks, though, Athlon presented better performance, being significantly faster that Intel’s flagship, Pentium III counterpart. AMD very soon sipped Athlon at particularly high volume, with the chips used by HP, Fukitsu and many more.
