Microsoft almost split in two | Techday, June 7th
On this TECHDAY in history, on June 7th 2000, Microsoft almost split in two. A United States Judge ordered the breakup of Microsoft into two companies: one focused on developing operating systems and one focused on researching and developing other applications. Microsoft immediately declared that it would file an appeal of the judgment. Just over a year later this ruling was overturned and, though Microsoft was sanctioned, it stayed as one company.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and several states sued the company for antitrust violations. The DOJ alleged that Microsoft had engaged in anti-competitive practices in an effort to maintain its dominant position in the computer operating system market.
The company ultimately avoided this fate by settling the lawsuit and agreeing to changes in its business practices. The company shift its focus on Cloud and Internet services and that helped it to recover and become an even stronger company than before.
