Release of Tetris | One of the most famous videogames of all times released | Techday, June 6th

On this TECHDAY in history, on June 6th 1984, the first version of one of the most famous games of all time, Tetris, was released in Moscow. Designed by Russian computer engineer Alexei Pajitnov on the Electronica 60 university workstation (a clone of the DEC PDP-11), it was the first video game of Soviet origin, released in commercial form in the West.

Tetris quickly became popular around the world due to its simple yet addictive gameplay. The game is based on the idea of clearing lines on a playing field by arranging a series of falling shapes, called “tetrominoes,” in a way that forms a complete horizontal line. With the formation of the line, it disappears, and the player scores points. The game becomes progressively more difficult as the player advances to higher levels, with the tetrominoes falling faster and in a more random order.

Over the years, Tetris released on a wide variety of platforms, including home consoles, arcade machines, and mobile devices. The game has also been adapted for other media, such as music and film. Tetris remains one of the most popular and recognizable video games of all time.
