IBM PC/XT enters the stage | Techday, March 8th
On this TECHDAY in history, on March 8th 1983, IBM released the Original IBM Personal Computer line. The IBM Personal Computer XT model 5160 was released and had a storage capacity of 30MB hard drive. Except for the addition of a built-in hard drive and extra expansion slots, it was very similar to the original IBM PC model 5150 from 1981. That computer was more commonly known as PC/XT (XT stans for eXtended Technology) and it was that model which would be copied by the hundreds of compatibles that will flood the global market in the coming years. Its price started at $4,995.
One of the main improvements of the PC/XT over the original PC was the inclusion of the hard drive, which provided significantly more storage space than floppy disks. The PC/XT also had a faster processor, the Intel 8088, which ran at 4.77 MHz. It had 256 kilobytes of RAM, expandable to 640 KB.
The PC/XT was popular in businesses and was often used as a server. It was eventually replaced by the IBM PC/AT in 1984, which had an improved processor and more expandability. Despite this, the PC/XT remained popular for several years and was a significant step forward in the evolution of personal computers.
