Linux 2 introduced | Techday, June 9th
On this TECHDAY in history, on June 9th 1996, Linux 2 was “born”. The first major upgrade of the Linux kernel to version 2.0 was complete. The most important new feature was the support of Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) systems, or more simply of computers with multiple processors. It was also the first kernel to accept kernel modules, i.e. code fragments for specialized processes, such as the device driver, which could be loaded afterwards, without requiring a reboot of the system.
This version represented a major step forward in the development of the Linux operating system, as it introduced several key features and improvements over the previous version.
One of the most significant changes in Linux 2 was the inclusion of support for multiple architectures. This meant that it could run on a variety of different computer hardware, including x86, SPARC, and Alpha processors. This made Linux more widely accessible and appealing to a wider range of users and organizations.
