On this TECHDAY in history, on May 9th 1936, the Hindenburg Zeppelin arrived at Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA, from Frankfurt, Germany, in what was the first passenger trip across the North Atlantic, which marked the beginning of regular transatlantic passenger service. The flight took approximately 3 days (6-9 May).
The German passenger airship operated from 1936 to 1937. It was the largest airship ever, with a length of 804 feet and a maximum diameter of 135 feet. Powered by four diesel engines, it could carry up to 50 passengers and crew. The Hindenburg was designed to be a luxurious mode of travel, with amenities such as a dining room, bar, lounge, and private cabins.
The Hindenburg made its first flight in March 1936, and over the next year and a half it made regular transatlantic crossings between Germany and the United States. In May 1937, the Hindenburg was making its final approach to Lakehurst, New Jersey, when it caught fire and crashed to the ground. The disaster killed 36 people and ended the era of the airship.
The cause of the disaster is still the subject of debate. It is generally believed to have been caused by a combination of factors, including the use of hydrogen gas for buoyancy and the presence of static electricity.
