Telegram becomes Russia’s number one chatting app
On Monday, Megafon announced that the Telegram messaging tool has overtaken WhatsApp and is now the most popular in Russia. It is a fact that more and more Russians are adopting the app. Moscow continues to restrict certain digital services. The owner of WhatsApp, Meta Platforms, is in a legal dispute with Russia. The company has been labelled an extremist organisation by prosecutors. They also have restrictions on what people can use every day. There are other messaging apps like Telegram in Russia and it makes things difficult for people wishing to escape the country.
The confrontation between the two sides kept escalating after Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. Telegram’s share of the market has skyrocketed this month. In the first two weeks of March, their share of mobile internet traffic was 63%, which is up from 48% in just two weeks. Meanwhile, WhatsApp’s share fell from 48% to 32%. Average Telegram users are also consuming more data per day than WhatsApp users.
Telegram has been going strong since it launched, mainly because of its widespread usage among numerous Russian news outlets, government entities, and public figures.”The popularity of the service has grown in the context of restrictions on access to other messaging apps and social networks,” Megafon said in a statement, noting that “the service started to grow rapidly since February 24,” the day Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
