Linux Foundation Launches ELISA

Linux Foundation Launches ELISA

The Linux Foundation today launched Enabling Linux in Safety Applications (ELISA). It is an open source project that includes tools to help companies build and certify their Linux-based systems.

To be more specific, failure to certify these systems will automatically mean how these programs installed in autonomous vehicles, robots, etc. could lead to loss of human life, property damage or environmental damage.

ELISA will work with certification and standards bodies in “multiple industries”. The system will determine ways in which Linux can be the cornerstone for the security of these systems across industry, in collaboration with British Arm designer Arm, BMW, Kuka, Linutronix and Toyota.

ELISA is essentially the successor to last year’s Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) 5.0 project. The latest version of a Linux Foundation project aimed at bringing open source technology to the automotive industry.

Previous releases focused mainly on entertainment systems. Version 5.0 introduced telematics and mapping solutions that allow competent authorities and car manufacturers to share mapping data. Data generates by autonomous cars, in addition to offering improved safety. Toyota and Amazon expressed their early support for this important project. And indeed Toyota is using AGL in the 2018 Camry.

Representative’s statements

Kate Stewart, from the Linux Foundation said. “All major industries, including energy, medical and automotive, want to use Linux for safety-critical applications. It can allow them to bring products to market faster and reduce the risk of critical design flaws.”

The aforementioned added. “The biggest challenge in our project was the lack of clear documentation of the tools needed to prove that a Linux-based system has the ability to meet the necessary security requirements for system certification. Past efforts to solve this problem have not met the expert requirements needed to establish a widely accepted methodology. By forming ELISA, though, we will be able to leverage the infrastructure and support of the broader Linux Foundation community needed to make this initiative successful.”

ELISA’s capabilities will mainly include the development of reference documents and the use of hypotheses for various scenarios in the systems under construction. Includes as well, the education of the open source community on best practices in safety engineering, the possibility of “continuous feedback” to improve processes and the automation of quality assurance tests.

The Linux Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium, founded in 2000 to support the development of Linux and promote its adoption. The foundation has more than 1,000 corporate members, including Ford, Mazda, Honda, Subaru and Suzuki. In general included are major companies in the software development software industry, as Microsoft and IBM. Big names in the chip manufacturing industry such as Nvidia, Intel and Arm.

ELISA is based on SIL2LinuxMP, a project aimed at certifying embedded Linux security systems on desktops and the Real-Time Linux Project.
