App about works of art | Smartify
Do you dread visiting an art museum because you are not ready, “well read” enough? Do you envy those who “know”, while your own daily routine leaves no time to study too? All that is in the past. If you install the Smartify app on your smart phone, you will have access to all the information about the artwork you are standing in front of if you “scan” it with your device.
Smartify, the new project for art launched last week at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Its creators described it as the “Shazam for art”.

Already, over 30 of the world’s largest museums use the application. These include the National Gallery (London), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), The Met (New York) and LACMA (Los Angeles). In addition to having access to detailed information about the piece of art, visitors with the app can listen to an interview created by that artist. “It’s an enthusiastic and knowledgeable friend who tells you more about a work of art,” says Anna Lowe, one of the founders of the company that invented the app. “Our team has always loved visiting museums and galleries, and seeing art,” as she puts it. The research found that people are more deeply engaged with a work of art when they learn about it, to understand the context in which it was created.
Currently, Smartify doesn’t recognise artworks that are not “stored” in its database. Its development team has also worked with the non-profit organisation Wikemedia Foundation to use Wikipedia’s image gallery to optimise the effectiveness of the image.
In addition, you can save and share your favorite art with other users through the app’s community. The app is always on the lookout for more pieces from artists whose work you follow and will send notifications to you when they’re available.
Plus, anyone can just behave, move as well as declare themselves “friendly”. Is this the “democratisation of high art”?
