Just a few minutes ago, Apple officially unveiled the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus at the event held at the Steve Jobs Theater. We’re going to take a detailed look at the company’s new devices and find out what news they bring compared to their predecessors.
Design
Last year’s iPhone models are a pretty good indicator of what to expect for the iPhone 8. It features a 16:9 aspect ratio, Touch ID on the front and aluminum construction, all inside a glass back.
The headphone port is also gone, in favor of a slimmer design. The bump for the camera is still there.
Cameras
The cameras on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have been upgraded for this generation. The 12-megapixel camera on the main camera and 7-megapixel lens on the front camera are pretty similar. For a more enhanced experience, one should choose the 8 Plus which has a dual-camera with two sensors.
But these sensors are brand new, which means the quality is much better than it was before. On top of that, the software side has many new additions, such as “Portrait Lighting”, which will enable you to color-edit in real-time.
The in-house video encoder has also been improved which makes it easier to identify the subject of frames. The quality will then be set accordingly.
Hardware
The new iPhone from Apple means having a new processor. This year’s model – the Apple A11 Bionic – is their first hexa-core SoC and has been designed to give you maximum power availability, but also save you energy where it is possible.
The 8 and 8 Plus are divided into two groups: economic ones named Mistral (4) and powerful ones called Monsoon (2). The devices come with 2048 and 128 MB of RAM respectively, while storage will reach up to 64 GB.
But wireless charging is a new and important addition to the iPhone — one of the reasons why we switched to glass. But don’t wait around for an official Apple charger just yet, as they have partnered with 3rd party manufacturers.
iOS 11
New features for iOS 11 were great, but with the iPhone X being available, it wasn’t really designed for that device. This isn’t a problem though as it still will work just fine.
This time, we have a UI redesign that contributes to extra space at the top. We also have an updated Control Center with some customization options and a new Cover Sheet in place of Notification Bar. Lastly, the App Store has been redesigned as well.
Price and availability
The 64 GB version of the iPhone 8 starts at €699 while the same with an 8 Plus is €799
The devices are making their way to a store near you Sept. 15.
