Autonomous delivery robots
San Francisco has given permission to Postmates to test its self-driving autonomous delivery robots by sending them out on the streets.
According to TechCrunch, everything is in place for Serve the robot to start working properly. The manufacturing company presented it back in December. After its unveiling, it’s now all set for its duties.
Postmates, a company specialising in food delivery and vegetable deliveries, already operates in 3.500 cities. It also leads the autonomous delivery sector. Serve can carry a weight of 22.5kg and travel distance of 50 km on a single charge.
San Francisco’s limitations on actual tests of Serve won’t allow for large-scale operations. So the streets won’t be filled with robots just yet, but their groundwork will be laid to prepare for the new era that’s approaching.
Postmates is not the only one, nor the first, as there are other companies like Starship Technologies who use autonomous robots to deliver packages in Britain. Add to the competition that there are already some Amazon, DoorDash and Grubhub robots in addition to many others, and you can see that the landscape will be very different soon.
What will happen to Postmates’ 350,000 carriers when they are replaced with Serve is not discussed for now.
