UPSat successfully launched on September 27th, 2017, an operation by NanoRacks. It is the first open design and software satellite sent up into space. The satellite launched at 12:24 pm ET. SatNOGS, a network of ground-based stations that is publicly open, began operating simultaneously in just thirty minutes UPS. Its activation marked around the year 1980 and has a ground base. It communicates with communication satellites orbiting Earth among other things.
All the satellite’s subsystems are running normally and the LEOP phase will begin in order to give scientists the data they need
The successful operation of UPSat in orbit is an important milestone for open software, open source hardware and space technology. Space technologies are becoming more accessible to all making them more practical for the masses.
‘UPSat’ is a satellite, developed and built in Greece by the Libre Space Foundation and the University of Patras.
Libre Space Foundation – LSF (https://libre.space) is LSF is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the promotion, evolution and development of open source space technologies. They not only design/build but they also deliver the majority of the subsystems (hardware and software) for UPSat. They are great at making things work and provide an excellent example of how open source communities can flourish.
