Lack of innovation in smartphones

Lack of innovation in smartphones

Reports have suggested that people are holding onto their older devices for longer. The main reason is the increase in the price of newer models. However, data that has been collected recently states that it’s not just the cost but the lack of innovation aswell.

A study recently conducted by Strategy Analytics states that most smartphone owners decide to upgrade their device after an average 33-month period. iPhone users tend to hold onto their phones for an average of 18 months while Samsung owners keep their device for an average of 16.5 months.

1 in 5 Caucasians think they won’t need to upgrade for at least 3 years, while Baby Boomers think it will take them more than 3 years to buy a new smartphone.

Gen Z is more attracted to Apple’s devices because they’ve been marketed as the “cool” products. Samsung has a lot of hype around their appliances and phones, but ultimately Gen X prefers their products. Women and Gen Z are more interested in the camera quality of these new devices.

Gen Y and Millennials are looking for features from smartphones that allow them to control the amount of time they spend on screen and disconnect when they want to.

7% of respondents plan to spend over $1,000 on a new device when upgrading. The number of innovations happening in the smartphone industry has decreased so much that it is taking people longer to upgrade their device.

The price of 5G-connected products will be quite high, making it a barrier for many consumers. The results of the survey found that only one in four would consider 5G when buying a new smartphone.
