The Chinese-originated app TikTok seems to have the most traffic according to IT security company Cloudflare, surpassing even Google. It currently has over 1 billion active users and its popularity soared during the pandemic. Over three billion downloads were, then, marked.
TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short-form videos, from genres like dance, comedy, and education, that have a duration from 15 seconds to 1 minute (three minutes for some selected users). Created by the Chinese company ByteDance and launched in September 2016 under the name Douyin for the Chinese market. In September 2017, it was launched as TikTok internationally. TikTok has become the world’s most popular app with over 2 billion downloads globally and over 1 billion active users.
The app’s success can be attributed to its recommendation algorithm that presents users with personalized video content based on their interests and engagement with the app. TikTok has become a cultural phenomenon. Viral challenges, dances, and music are all over the app. However, it has also faced controversy, with privacy concerns and accusations of censorship. It has received bans in several countries including India and the United States. Despite this, TikTok continues to grow and influence popular culture, with brands and celebrities using the app to reach a younger audience.
