The social fabric has collapsed
Social platforms, like the internet, are increasingly creating opportunities for people from around the world to connect with each other. There are a lot of benefits that come with using these mediums. But according to Chamath Palihapitiya, former Facebook exec, social media has the opposite impact and “takes a toll on society.”
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, recently admitted to feeling guilt for the role he played in the platform’s rise. He felt guilty because of how much his service impacted various people’s lives without them knowing what went on behind the scenes. I worry about the dangers of the technology we create. We create feedback loops that are meant to be temporary, but are continually generated, which helps highlight a problem with our society but also hinders solutions to the issue. This cycle of negative feedback creates a social fabric and an inability for political dialogue and cooperation. Not just in America – but globally too!
He notes that fake news and misinformation is a huge problem globally. Brave are examples of India and the way false information via WhatsApp messages resulted in seven innocent people being lynched.
