In February, Google revealed that only 1.1% of its users have the latest software version. Wired reports that many Android manufacturers are tricking their consumers by falsely stating that their devices have received the latest security updates, when in fact they haven’t.
Researchers at Security Research Labs spent two years looking at 1,200 phones from Google, Samsung, Sony, Nokia, Huawei and other companies and they found that there is often a gap between which update version the phones say they have and what they actually have.
The general conclusion that researchers made was “if you go for cheaper devices, you will end up with a less well-maintained piece of this ecosystem.”
A Google spokesperson said: ”We would like to thank Karsten Nohl and Jacob Kell for their ongoing effort to strengthen security in the Android ecosystem. We are working with them to improve our detection mechanisms to determine when a device is using an alternative security patch instead of the one Google has suggested”.
Security updates are important for protecting your device from different types of malware but built-in platform protections, such as app sandboxing and security services like Google Play Protect, are just as important.
