Laptop meets…printer? | Notejet BN22 launch | Techday, February 22nd
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 22nd 1993, Canon announces an innovative laptop. The Notejet BN22 is the world’s first laptop with a built-in A4 bubble printer without significant weight or size burden. Canon, which developed bubble jet technology in spray printers, is also the company that made the first laptop with a built-in printer. Technically, the BN22 was a standard laptop with a low-power 486 processor from Texas Instruments. It had a hard drive up to 180 MB and VGA graphics. However, its PSTN display, made by Sharp, was monochrome and relatively small (9.5 inches).
The load from the printer mechanism was relatively limited, as it weighed no more than 3.5 kg and it was 5.5 cm thick. According to Canon specifications, the NiCAD rechargeable battery was sufficient for four hours of computer use or for the printing of 60 A4 pages.
