Television Demonstration by AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories | Techday, April 7th
On this TECHDAY in history, on April 7th 1927, AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories held a demonstration of television and it was attended by many members of the press and dignitaries. This event marked the beginning of TV as a mass-market medium. The live picture and voice of Secretary of Commerce Hoover were transmitted over telephone lines from Washington to New York City.
AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories, known as Nokia Bell Labs, played a significant role in the development of television. One key contribution of Bell Labs was the development of an all-electronic television system. Prior to this, television systems were mechanical, meaning they were prone to breakdowns and had low picture quality.
Another contribution of Bell Labs was the development of the videophone, called the Picturephone. Demonstrated at the 1964 World’s Fair, it was capable of transmitting still images over telephone lines. Although the Picturephone was not a commercial success, it paved the way for the development of modern video conferencing systems.
Bell Labs also played a key role in the development of color television. In 1940, Bell Labs researchers developed the first practical color television system, called the Kinescope. This system used a CRT to display images and three separate electron guns to create a color image. The Kinescope was eventually replaced by more advanced color television systems, but it was an important step in the development of modern television.
