Version 1.0 of the Firefox web browser was released on this TECHDAY in history, on November 9th 2004, by Mozilla. Initially, it was called Phoenix, and then Firebird, but since both these names caused some legal issues, it was renamed Mozilla Firefox on February 9, 2004. This browser is important in the history of the internet because it marks the first serious response to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer’s dominance over the browser market since Netscape’s undoing many years earlier. One of the key features of Firefox was its support for web standards, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Firefox also included a number of features that made it more secure than other browsers, including a built-in pop-up blocker and a “sandbox” security model that isolated different tabs and windows from each other.
Firefox was an immediate success and quickly gained a large following among web users. Within its first year of release, Firefox had been downloaded over 50 million times. As of January 2021, Firefox is one of the most widely used web browsers, with a global market share of around 8%.
