How to free up storage | Clear hard drive space easily
Microsoft just released a new update to Windows 10 called the April 2018 Update. There were new features and general improvements such as Timeline and Focus Assist but also some lesser-known improvements. Sometimes updates can take up an excessive amount of hard drive space and this can be a downside.
The April 2018 update could be responsible for taking up a large portion on your hard drive, thus reducing the free space to something in the tens of gigabytes. We’re going to help you fix this problem by showing you how to free up over 30GB of storage space on your Windows 10 machine.
There are a number of ways to free up space on your hard drive – but we’ll focus on the easiest one instead.
- Click on the Start button and type in Disk Cleanup. Next right click on Disk Cleanup and select Run as administrator . Make sure you have selected the correct system drive and click OK.
- The tool will calculate how much space it can reclaim, then click on the Clean up system files button . Re-select the system drive and click OK again.
- Then it will recalculate your space savings, but this time it includes a new option – Previous Windows installation . This will include the files created by installing the April 2018 update – it is around 31GB.
- Clear out your hard drive to reclaim space by checking this box, as well as the Windows installation files, and clicking OK.
